A Place Of Silence - first video for NOIR by Corina Vladescu Spring/Summer 2012 campaign.

Delighted to present the newest collection from a very old friend of Blaubushka and Romanian clothing designer extraordinaire Corina Vladescu. Her journey through the fashion world has been a fascinating one; seeing her work as a stylist for a popular national television programme, make costumes for the National Opera of Bucharest, and dress numerous singers, actresses and television stars along the way, even designing for Roisin Murphy and acting as costume assistant for Madonna. In May of this year she was invited to present her collection at none other than Oxford Fashion Week, which included designers such as Alexander McQueen and Marithe et Francois Girbaud. To those familiar with her work this came as no surprise. Her designs are beautiful creations. The strength of her character eminates from them, revealing garments of urban allure and dominant feminine charm.

The remaining college year shall be punctuated with glittering black tie events so with this in mind here is my guide to the hottest formal wear accessories for both guys and dolls. SS'12 is shaping up to be a season of contradictions were opposing colours, shapes and concepts are converging to form new and exciting trend hybrids. Don't be afraid to approach your choice of formal attire with a sense of adventure and playfulness.
This most obvious way to accessorise your look then by focusing on the most important accessory of all: your crowning glory. Fashion designers the world over seem to have taken inspiration from upcoming movie releases such as The Artist and The Great Gatsby, recalling for the glamour of old and re-honouring finger waves. Finger waves were developed in the 1920's to add style to, and soften the hard appearance of, the bobbed hairstyles that became very popular during the flapper period. Moving from the 20s to the 40s; Miu Miu pay homage the victory roll possibly one of the most recognisable looks of the 1940's and one of the more flattering as it is good for most face types and figures. Top reverse rolls are swept up away from the face, rolled and pinned toward the top of the head where side reverse rolls are one of the most familiar of the 1940's hairstyles. Men folk can get retro-inspired by those dashing and slick Mad Men grooming styles and clean hit towel shave from the local barbers.

Headpieces and hats offer a multitude of styling options, from to skullcaps to fascinators, turbans to hair jewels, peacock feathers to birdcage veils somewhere out there is the perfect piece for you. Louis Vuitton and Zooey Deschanel (see 'What Are You Doing New Years Eve?' video) have both given us all permission to unleash our inner little princess with the most prised item of the dress-up box: the tiara. Stars such as Isabel Lucas have demonstrated how to unlock your inner quirky soul with vintage head jewels. If your looking your a more unique item then why not try out one of our many local milliners such as Velvet Bow where you can have a custom made fascinator/headpiece designed for you or choose from a pre-selected line.

One major item of attention this season is the humble shoe which Prada has transformed into a piece: colourful wingtip espadrille which stand as wearable artwork of iconic design and mid-century culture. Cartoon chic is a major trend this SS12 with bonus fashion points going to pastel patents and chunky ankle straps. These are elements that carry into the handbag and jewellery collections. Opt for well structured items with opposing textures and fabrics such as suede and metal and with as much crystal as possible. Why not add a little extra to your neckline with the accessory du jour the attachable collar in lace or sequin.

When so many men stand around in almost identical suits it can be difficult to stand out from the crowd. Neck wear often becomes the focus of attention with a flurry of bow ties, ties, cravats and stylish shirt collars on offer to the sometimes bewildered gent. If your feeling brave why not opt for a velvet bowtie or dare I even suggest patterned bow tie, paisley silk cravat or bespoke buttoned collar. When the rest of your attire acts as a conventional backdrop why fear a few simple glimpses of colour and even match your socks to your neck wear. If however you find bravery in your sense of humour then play up some of the verging on ridciously traditional accessories such as the monocle, cane or pocket corsage. Fancy having even more fun and forgetting about convention altogether then go on get the Dumb and Dumber suit you've always dreamed of or even do a Neil in Inbetweenwes style, I promise to take the blame!

UCC Express - SS12 Trends

Here is my article for the current issue of the UCC Express....

Both the new season and the new year are now upon us. This is a time to forge a new bright new path to your wardrobe and cast off all those AW11 shackles and embrace a colourful future. My personal style resolution this year is to make my own interpretation of all the new season fashion trends and so here the looks du jour as I shall be making my own this spring summer.

I will mostly be trying;
“Printiful”; SS'12 catwalk shows were a bright and bold explosion of electric prints. Exuberent tones and block coloring carry forward to springtime as an array of ditial prints, techno texture and orgiami-esque shapes. From tribal to folk, paisley to landscape my warebobe is sure to become a mash-uo of designs, patterns and prints.
Modern Retro; Prada have prefectly embodied the spirit of the modernly retro woman: kooky yet sophosticated, prim yet provocative, iconic yet fresh. This is a look that stands as a balance of contradictions, sugar-coated with candy tones and kitsch embellishment. Popsicle pretty mid-century modernisim with upbeat attitude and sorbet swagger. Think downtown Lolita housewife that's both sugar and spice.

I will be dabbling in;
Pantone Minimialism; Enter the vision of whispered beauty, of earthy elegance and soft allure. The Pantone woman is stripped bare, natural, pale and pure. Offset with a halo of whispy tendrils and a crown of undone curls.
Jazzebele; Straight from the set of The Great Gatsby or The Artist is the 1920s starlet loves all things dropwaist, louche silk and of course her Marcel waves. Ask yourself why love Art Deco when you can be Art Deco instead.
Cyper Aqua; The Space Age collided with the Merpeople to create a metallic underworld. This must be underwater love.

I've reached that point in my life where I must now wear 'work clothes' far more than I get to wear 'play clothes'. Why must work wear be so boring? Why must it feel so stifling? Well it doesn't have to does it, one can look smart and still maintain facets of their individuality. My plan is to embrace knee-length looks in interesting textures, subtle colour palettes, smart flats and quirky detailing.

Motley - December Issue

My article for the December Iss of Motley Magazine...

For me the word Christmas is strongly associated with the word movie. Rather then discuss here all the party wear trends and festive jumpers I am instead going to focus on my favourite films and their iconic wardrobes. What better inspiration to take you through the Christmas Season than all the movies you'll have watched the day before? So from morning mass to midnight drinks all the classic re-runs and new releases have got you covered til New Years!

Doctor Zhivago; The beautiful Lara Antipova, played by Julie Christie, our delicate heroine; forlorn and fragile in her layers of fur (let's make ours faux fur) with her rosy cheeks and lips with that perfectly dishevelled chignon teasing out from under her Cossack hat. She stands as a vision of bruised beauty against the cold and savaged Soviet landscape. This look can easily be translated into a modern remake given the multitudes of faux fur currently adorning the high street and the worsening Irish climate. This is a look that's perfect for setting tongues wagging on the walk up for Communion at Christmas Mass.

The Great Escape; Captain Virgil Hilts played by Steve McQueen, is not just the Cooler King but the King of Cool. He's a man's man, a brute beauty, strong, stylish and masculine. This film demonstrates how best to work the casual daytime look with both practical ease and aesthetic swagger; brown leather jacket, classic tshirt and chinos. Those film-fashion buffs amongst you may even notice the wardrobe homage to this film that Quantum of Solace is.

The Royal Tenenbaums; Margot Tenenbaum; perfect in every dysfunctional way. One of my favourite Anderson characters is Margot Tenenbaum, played by Gwyneth Paltrow. I love her dead pan tone and vacuum-packed expression; her kohled eyes with their melancholic stare, her humour as blunt as her haircut, her unvoiced abandonment and struggling heart covered with a striped t-shirt dress. Most of all I love her coat, perfect for that taxi dash into town. If nothing else this stylish film may help you realise that some families are even more erratic than your own.

Breakfast at Tiffanys; Audrey Hepburn's Holly Golightly is creature of such timeless elegance and classic beauty that she could never be considered a cliche. This happy-go-lucky socialite flitters about town with a demure grace and an innately feminine charm. Her iconic little black dress shall see you though any cocktail party. Offset with subtle accessories, a bespoke bouffant and must have eyeliner for that ultimate finish.

Miu Miu have captured my heart once again and this time its the hair that I'm loving most. Behold the victory roll possibly one of the most recognizable looks of the 1940's and one of the most flattering. Top reverse rolls are swept up away from the face, rolled and pinned toward the top of the head. Side reverse rolls are one of the most familiar of the 1940's hairstyles. This style is popular on most women, because it is good for most face types and figures. To create them, roll a thick strand of hair into a circle and pin it down or wear slightly flatter for a modern update. If my own personal ability is anything to go buy it will take a lot of practice to achieve the desired look but the results make it worthwhile!

I have brought you earlier collections from Australian designers Anna Plunkett and Luke Sales but now I present to you my all time favourite collection. This crazy duo met whilst attending East Sydney Technical College and continued on together to the Fourth International Support Awards in Italy where they famously turned down internships with John Galliano and thankfully started their own label 'Romance Was Born'. Their mission: To design clothing that adds a pinch of zany, a peppering of spandex, and a lashing of eccentricity to everyday attire.

This is a collection is an infusion of The Great Gatsby and Star Wars. A story of the futuristic flapper, a vision of cyper decadence and galactic glamour.

Motley Magazine - November Issue

My article for the latest issue of Motley Magazine...

In a way I think it is much easy for a man to be considered well-dressed than it is for a woman. Why so? Perhaps because of less competition amongst the male population making it easier to stand out from the crowd with only a little effort. For the most part it is far easier to get the basics right. Take for a sartorial example a fellow I once observed on the Tube; looking very professional in a well tailored yet demure suit and brogues that he had paired with shocking blood red socks. I sat there fashion perving on his socks that perfectly complimented the tiny red detailing of his tie. So simple yet effective and I think that encapsulates the upper hand menswear has over women's; the immense possibility of twisting a classic with such a minute change.
How does one suit-up and learn from the great such as Cary Grant or Dean Martin and interpret them into a modern day version? Love or hate his music Peter Doherty we can all appreciate his ability to suit up like a disgruntled dapper. He wanders, he rambles, he saunters about like a forlorn hero from some long forgotten movie of the 1920s. He looks like he rolled out of bed and just fell through a vintage store; socks before trousers, trousers before shoes. Actor Adrien Brody keeps to the classic shapes and fabrics but manages to keep them fresh with unconventional twists such as wearing a tie underneath his shirt or pairing large french cuffs of a tux shirt with a slim line suit. Nobody does dressed down formal better or has such a knack for neck wear as Brody (probably as he doesn't rely on the pre-made Penneys shirt and tie combos). Male blogger Adrián Cano oh I love his use of hats and the way he weaves the colour red through his outfits. I don't think the average Irish man takes proper advantage of the wide colour palette - I mean you don't all have to be Chuck Bass but colour isn't something to be afraid of. Jamie Hince with his light blue suit very nearly upstaged Kate Moss on their wedding day.
Parting paragraph. Everyman needs a grey suit, there's a reason people said Johnny Cash looked like he was going to a funeral and even a navy/midnight blue suit limits your shoe or tie options. The ulimate suit is the grey three piece suit, there's a reason people say Daniel Craig is hot as f*@%. The ultimate shoe; as seen on Joesph Gordon Levitt in the film Brick.

I picked up one for the cross print tees during the summer and can't wait to add another design to my collection.

Cathy Jackson studied and graduated from the Limerick School of Art and Design with a BA Honours Degree in Fashion Design in 2004. During her time spent studying she worked at her first job as an intern for Luella Bartley, former editor of British Vogue in Shoreditch, London on Luella’s Spring/Summer collection. It was here where she was inspired by her love of mix and match street fashion with a feminine twist and this trend continues in her work today. Cathy draws inspiration from her love of vintage - from old furniture, old fabrics, prints and patterns, her collections to date have been a mix of fresh floral prints and patterns drawing inspiration from old versus new mixed together. She creates designs edgy yet girlie mixing up sweet with street.

How did you first enter the fashion world and what has made you stay? Did you find it difficult to 'break into' fashion in Cork? Entering the fashion world started when I did a degree in the Limerick School or Art and design studying fashion – I was hooked from day one. It was the long hours with no sleep, the hustle and bustle, the creativity, the people – I fell in love with everything back then – little has changed and I couldn’t imagine doing anything else today.

Has your perception of 'fashion' changed since your initial involvement? Not exactly – From a design point of view it hasn’t changed in that you always need to push the boundaries and do something new and fresh, finding something different and exciting – be it a new fabric or a shape – being on your toes following the quick nature of the Industry has always been the case.

How would you rate fashion in Cork? I’m loving the fashion in Cork these past couple of years. You don’t need to travel to another part of the country to find something unique anymore – we have plenty of designers, boutiques and vintage shops right on our doorstep to strut our style all year round.

How big a role do you think Cork has in the overall Irish fashion scene? The amount of creative and talented people now in Cork is bigger than ever – we’ve always been the home of some great talents but with social media now connecting people quicker than ever more like minded people are collaborating and getting involved together. Having Lockdown models hosting our Cork Fashion Week has brought photographers, models, make up artists, stylists, designers, bloggers and boutique owners into the forefront of fashion not only in Cork but nationwide.

What can we expect from you in the coming months? Busy busy busy - A new website, launching a new bag and accessories range as well as starting the next collection!

Lucy Coogan of The Bear Necessities...

For the September issue of Blaubushka, I've made a moodboard for a Sixties style editorial. Knee high boots, mini skirts, huge sunglasses, shift dresses and tights being just some of the garments around the shops to wear while trying to rock the Sixties trend! I've decided to stick with a palette of beige and browns, creams, whites and a touch of pastels, rather than loud, bright colours.

My 60's fashion obsession began with my first viewing of Sienna Miller as Edie Sedgwick in 'Factory Girl'. For me, the film is all about fashion (and drugs, but more importantly fashion! Haha) and glamour. Glamour seems to be lost on most of today's people, we've forgotton all about being glamourous during todays troubles, whereas the sixties seemed like the more troubles, the more glamour.

So I was SO excited when the 60's trend came in this season, it's so glamorous to wear and is even better to look at!

As much as I love fashion and the world of blogging it's been great to take some time out, leave the internet to hang out with friends and indulge in one of my other great loves music. Last Saturday I had the great privilege of attending Dead School's latest single launch '3:17/'Exude' in Cyprus Avenue. In support were Clonmel's Let's Run to the Philosophers and Glasgow's Battle For Second Place.

The launch of this single fell nicely in place with the Dead School's first anniversary. Dead School comprises of and Donal McDonald (vocals/percussion), James McDonald (guitar/drums /vocals), Cathal Maher (guitar/drums /keys) and Ruairi Dale (bass). A year on and these four with their electic swagger and pounding force are proving themselves as genuine talent.

Dead School play Whelans Thursday August 25th, Ballinamore Free Fringe Festival August 27th plus many other dates. Dead School have also made it into the finals of the Arthur's Day Competition.

Just writing to let you all know that I'm taking a few weeks break from Blaubushka but will be posting as normal on my other blog The Hostess Handbook. I'm back to college at the end of this month and so I plan to really kick back, let loose and enjoy my final days of freedom. When the ASOS AW11 lookbook dropped into my inbox this week I could barely contain my excitement. AW is by far my favourite season and ASOS have given my more reason than most to countdown the remaining days of summer.

The plaid shift, the sophistication of mustard and brogues, the sequin print, the berry tone socks, the most beautiful green coat, the smart leopard print panelling, the marriage of the Sloane grunger with the New Romantic footman. I could go on, in fact I shall...next week, stay tuned!
