Kicking off the guest bogger love-in is the darling Kitty Cat of Red Lemonade.
Sci-fi fashion can be a tricky realm to conquer. Star Trek onesies and Fifth Element-style outfits consisting of strategically placed white straps are all well and good, but one of the very first and dare I say it, most stylish sci-fi characters was wowing audiences back in 1956 with her slinky mini-dresses. Back off Barbarella, because Anne Francis as the foxy Altaira Morbius in Forbidden Planet beat you to it.
Altaira's entrance in the film causes Leslie Nielsen's character immediate consternation over the saucy length of her dress and she later taunts his manly restraint by going for a swim in the pool in the nip, the cheeky wagon. Her wardrobe is a dazzling display of sparkles and form fitting hotness, with her ornate golden mini-dress later becoming one of the most iconic costumes in sci-fi memorabilia. The original is estimated to be worth a massive $30,000.
Altaira is all legs, sequins and honey blonde hair, an unexpected surprise for the crew that land on the alien planet where only she and her father, Dr. Morbius remain. However, she does have one hell of an accessory, not to mention her very own personal designer and dressmaker in the ever helpful Robby the Robot, an invention of her father's.
Altaira: Robby, I must have a new dress, right away.
Robby: Again?
Altaira: Oh, but this one must be different! Absolutely nothing must show - below, above or through.
Robby: Radiation-proof?
Altaira: No, just eye-proof will do.
Robby: Thick and heavy?
Altaira: Oh, no, Robby. It must be the loveliest, softest thing you've ever made for me, and fit in all the right places, with lots and lots of star sapphires.
Now there's a droid worth having.
